Peptides: One of Skincare’s Hidden Gems?

April 28, 2025 by Uche Moghalu Leave a Comment

The beauty industry is filled with many buzzwords, listing out ingredients that are said to have life-changing effects on the skin. Among the vast majority of ingredients, one truly stands out: peptides. Like many others, peptides are a chemical compound utilized in skincare products to help with skin conditions. More specifically, peptides are short chain amino acids that act as the foundation of protein, essentially a smaller version of protein. They have been shown to play a role in anti-aging, inflammation, and destroying microbes. They also promote the growth of other proteins such as collagen, elastin, and keratin which are all utilized in both skin and hair care. By applying peptides onto the skin, the skin receives a signal encouraging it to create more of these skin-boosting ingredients.

Without the use of peptides, the proteins that help create the skin, such as collagen and elastin would not work correctly. This would result in a loss in firmness and bounciness in the skin, as well as a faster appearance of wrinkles. There are over hundreds of peptides that each work differently to help support the skin, however, there are some key peptides employed in cosmetics specifically for consumers to enjoy. Furthermore, in order to identify peptides on an ingredients list, the word will either end with “peptide” or begin with “palmitoyl”

  • Tridecapeptide-1: a folded peptide that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Palmitoyl hexapeptide-12: a synthetic peptide that enhances the skin’s barrier and firmness.
  • Tripeptide-5: helps with skin’s plumpness and exudes a youthful appearance.

Peptides are not only used in the beauty industry. They can be seen derived from food as well. As they are smaller versions of protein, we can gain them from the protein in foods such as eggs, milk, meat, soy, and fish. Furthermore, another popular supplement that you may not know is a peptide is creatine. Incorporated into multiple powders and drinks, creatine peptides help build strength and muscle mass.

However, with the many benefits that come from peptides, there are possible side effects as well. For example, allergic reactions such as redness, itching, or rashes can occur. Inflammation at the site where the peptides are applied is possible. For collagen peptides supplements, that can be ingested, they can lead to digestive issues such as sore stomach, diarrhea, or constipation. To reduce the possibility of adverse effects on the skin, it is encouraged to only use peptides twice a day, once in the morning and night. As for supplements, make sure to read labels carefully and discontinue use if any discomfort occurs.

Peptides are seen as a hidden gem ingredient that many consumers do not understand the overall value of. To reiterate, peptides have anti-aging properties that help with skin firmness, texture, and appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Through collagen production, peptides also help with keeping the skin hydrated by locking in the moisture of other skincare products applied. Lastly, collagen peptides can help promote wound healing as well.

The possibilities with peptides are endless and accessible for every consumer. As building blocks of the skin, they are vital to maintain the health of the skin. The next time a wound heals, a new muscle forms, or bounce has returned to the skin, we have peptides to thank for them all.
