Daily Design: Food on Instagram

September 26, 2014 by Mayra Moran Leave a Comment

Daily Design Banner

On instagram, people pride themselves on how good their food looks, and they are not afraid to show it. A handful of popular hastags such as #foodporn, #foodies, and #foodofinstagram has filled up newsfeeds for people to be jealous. The way in which food is being served has taken a new art form that has caught many peoples attention. Mason jars full of lemonade with a mouthwatering burger and a basket of haystack fries was the first picture that caught my eye. Although it may just seem like a bunch of pictures of cool places with good looking food, there is much more intention and thought behind it.

Restaurants have chosed what goes on the walls, the menu, and most importantly, how the food is being presented to their customers. This falls into the realm of design. Every plate has been thought of and designed by a chef. Recently, many start up restaurants have taken on a particular visual aestetic of making environments that are simple and vibrant with color. These types of restaurants have become even more of a trend through instagram.

Food posts are not only  an appreciation of the art of making food, but also allows instagram users to engage in design as well. Whether it was a simple snapshot and upload or minutes full of filters, cropping, and hashtag contemplations, every picture has been uniquely designed. Every person determines the composition of where the plate will be, the lighting, whether the decorations on the table will show up or not, and so on. Design can be found in all types of ways. In this case, social media and food have created a match made in heaven for not only those lucky enough to eat such tasty looking food, but for viewers as well.
