Marriage Story

November 16, 2019 by David Khechumyan Leave a Comment

“Till death do us part…,” a common phrase for marriage that seems to lack meaning, since it leads to more couples abiding by a phrase like, “Till divorce do us part.”  Marriage Story, is a new movie created to explore a marriage that comes to an end, and what happens in its aftermath. This modern day take on a controversial topic like divorce, leaves viewers impacted by the darkness within, and the intense plot of the story. Marriage Story, shows the viewers a side of getting a divorce that isn’t so simple, but at the same time, the importance of sharing a story like this one.

The divorce is based around a young couple Nicole and Charlie Barber, and the aftermath with their son. Nicole Barber balances being a mother and a wife, while acting for her husband Charlie. Charlie Barber is a stage director, father, and husband who loves the work he does in New York. The story goes on to show how unhappy Nicole has gotten in their relationship, and is getting a divorce, even though she is still in love with Charlie. Then it continues to show the struggle of them fighting against each other for custody of their son Charlie, when Nicole moves to Los Angeles, California to pursue an acting career.

Charlie, who is very career driven, stays in New York to direct, while flying back and forth from Los Angeles for his son. Seeing the couple facing a gruesome legal battle for custody, unmasks the darkness that can come from this process of cutting off a person that historically played such an important role in one’s life.  This film allows for characters to portray this struggle on the screen, and leave an impression on the audience about what divorce can be like sometimes.

Divorce is a subject that is often dismissed and disregarded as something simple in some films, but this film makes it clear how important it is to address it. This film portrays all the hardships a couple faces when all they are trying to do is move on with their life, and the effects it has on loved ones around them. People do not realize that a divorce can end up getting dark and damaging, and at times leaves people to lose who they are.

Marriage Story, is not just a film about a married couple getting a divorce, but reflects the message of a controversial issue that audiences can associate with. A movie that exemplifies the unfortunate reality some couples face during their downfall is produced  with a clear message on marriages ending and the toll it takes on a person dealing with this hardship, while trying to keep a family together. On a larger scale, this film was not only created for providing an example of divorce, but for showing the struggle members of society have faced with divorce and child custody. It’s a powerful film intended to not just be another story, but aims to captivate its audience and allows them to learn through the film.
