Learning 3d: Animatic

November 8, 2012 by NicolasK Leave a Comment

This blog tracks the making of an animated short using Autodesk Maya’s 3d software.

The Thumbnails have been assembled into video form. It was helpful to start seeing how the timing will work out, and if the shots will match across cuts.

Here’s the video…

“The Trees” Animatic from Nicolas Kendall-Bar on Vimeo.

Creating an Animatic was not as easy as I thought it would be. A storyboard doesn’t transfer into video form seamlessly. I really noticed how helpful it is to have several intermediate drawings instead of just one storyboard image. In a video, time keeps moving ahead and there is no extra time to imagine movement or read a description. Having more images makes it much easier to visualize whats going on. Most of the time drawing the beginning and end works well, but I also found that drawing the anticipation and then halfway through the action works even better.

Next Week: Some thumbnails will be replaced with rendered animations.
