This History of: Mocha Coffee

March 7, 2022 by Dayvin Mendez Leave a Comment

Coffee and chocolate are a mix that will never fail to be amazing. Mocha coffee, also known as caffè mocha, is a drink made up of espresso, hot milk, chocolate syrup, or cocoa powder, and sweetener. The origins of Mocha coffee actually go back to Yemen. the city of Al Moka, or Mocha, is a coastal city along the Red Sea and a major port for trading coffee during the 15th through 18th centuries. The city was named Moka/Mocha after the Arabian Moka/Mocha coffee beans that were exported by the city. The beans grew and were harvested in the mountain regions of Central Yemen, and their popularity helped shape Yemen as a place with great coffee.

The Mocha coffee we have today originated in the United States but was heavily inspired by Bicerin. Bicerin is a drink made from coffee, chocolate, and cream that was popular in Turin, Italy. The drink was originally referred to as the Bavaresia, but a coffee shop, Caffè al Bicerin, helped with the drink’s popularity, and the name was eventually changed. The differences between the Mocha coffee in the United States and the Bicerin in Italy are extremely small, but they’re still two separate things.

Mocha coffee is usually made up of one-third espresso and two-thirds steamed milk. The steamed milk is often mixed with cocoa powder or chocolate syrup. Since the ingredients and process of making Mocha coffee is so simple, there are many ways to put a spin on the drink. Adding extra ingredients like toppings or syrups is usually the route people take. Toppings can include adding whipped cream on top, milk froth, cinnamon, or marshmallows. If you don’t love milk or dark chocolate, you can make a white mocha. The same steps as making a regular mocha but replace the chocolate syrup or powder with white chocolate instead. There are also variants of the drink that mix the two syrups. These are referred to by multiple names like a black and white mocha, marble mocha, zebra mocha, etc. During the holidays, Starbucks offers their famous Peppermint Mocha. It’s their signature Espresso Roast combined with steamed milk, sweet mocha sauce and peppermint-flavored syrup, topped with whipped cream and dark chocolate curls.

Mocha coffee is a lot of people’s favorite treat to have at all times during the year. Its mix of being something sweet and having the caffeine to keep you awake, makes it one of the most popular coffee drinks out there.
