Immigration

October 1, 2021 by Nicole Betances Leave a Comment

Immigration, one of the most controversial topics in the United States. This is a topic that completely divides the nation. On the conservative side, there are those that believe illegal immigration should be punished and that all “illegals” should be deported. On the liberal side, are those that believe everyone deserves to stay in this country regardless of immigration status.

Issues of immigration begin to get more complicated when children are brought into the conversation. If a child immigrated to the United States with their parents, they are still considered undocumented. Even though it wasn’t the child’s decision to move to a different country, they still have to suffer the consequences of a decision they didn’t make. This is why the implementation of DACA is so incredibly important. This gives children the opportunity to get the education everyone deserves and seeks out when they come to this country.

DACA, Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, was created during the Obama administration and it stops the deportation of people that were brought to the United States as children. These children, who are now adults, continue to be undocumented. This program lasts 2 years and must be renewed. This program also allows the Dreamers to get work permits and health insurance from their employers. These benefis begin to give undocumented children the opportunity for higher education.

The morality of DACA is something that can’t be argued. Punishing children is inhumane and unfair. Everyone deserves the right to an education. However, in July 2021, a judge started to question the constitutionality of DACA and he believes Obama exceeded his power when he created DACA.

The Biden administration is trying to provide a path for citizenship to many undocumented immigrants, however, the future of DACA remains uncertain until futher notice.
