Coronavirus and White Privilege

November 18, 2020 by Nicole Betances Leave a Comment

The president of the United States has gotten Corona. After months of saying wearing a mask was something unnecessary and making his followers believe it’s their “right” to not wear a mask, this man and his team are all affected by Corona and contributed to the spreading of this pandemic. If the country’s president doesn’t set an example for his blind followers, America will never be able to get rid of this pandemic at all. Along with being concerned for their own health, the usage of a mask protects the lives of others. This is a concept that is difficult for some people to understand since they only seem to be concerned with their Amendment rights. Personal rights should be the last concern on someone’s mind if it will benefit the general public. In this case, wearing a mask is something a person should do not only to protect themselves but also to protect others. Along with the discussion of Amendment rights, comes the discussion of White privilege and how poorer communities are the ones being affected the most by this pandemic. Poorer communities are crammed together, there is little to no outside spaces, and there are fewer resources for the communities. When there was a Corona outbreak in NY thousands of affluent families that lived in Manhattan were able to leave their homes in the city and go to their vacation homes in the suburbs, away from the pandemic. This is something low-income people can’t afford to do. Many people found themselves unemployed and in need of a job during the peak of the pandemic. Many were thinking about how they would be able to pay rent without a job, fearing evictions due to their lack of savings because they have to live paycheck to paycheck. Rich and White America doesn’t seem to believe they will be affected by this pandemic which makes the situation more difficult and dangerous for poor Americans.
